Garden Planting Requirement
We hope that the information in this hand-out will help you be hugely successful in your vegetable garden efforts.
However, before you put a seed or a plant in the ground Sperbeck’s wants to make sure you start right from the ground up!
All the effort and money put into buying and planting your vegetables, flowers, herbs, and other food producing plants will go to waste if the soil is not properly prepared!
- Start by rototilling digging and turning the native soil a minimum of 6”. But 12” is even better! Our soils in our area are mostly loam and/or clay. We recommend 25 50% organic compost to the native soils for the best results in all planting installations.
Our bulk materials division sells a wonderful mix of humus to amend your soils with.
You can buy it from a 5 gallon container, partial cubic yard, or full yard and pick up orhave it delivered for a nominal fee.
In addition for vegetable and annual flower beds we use and recommend. - Paydirt
A unique blend of chicken manure, redwood sawdust, peat moss and mushroom compost. Adds organic matter to the soil. It helps loosen hard soils, improves water and root penetration and enhances the bacterial action in the soil. Mix into the soil prior to planting flowers, vegetables and shrubs or use as a top cover for newly seeded lawns.
- Master Start
A starter fertilizer formulated to supply adequate nitrogen to new plantings and greater amounts of phosphorous and potassium to aid in the development of a strong root and stem structure. In addition to N-P-K, Master Start contains calcium, iron, manganese and zinc. Formulated with Nitroform Nitrogen Use for all plantings including lawns.
- Earthworm Castings
A natural organic soil conditioner. It helps loosen hard soils, improve soil aeration and conserve water. An excellent addition to native soils.
- Root Master
• To prevent transplant shock in plants.
• Hormone aids in root development.
• Mix with water. One pint makes 96 gallons of mixture.
- Tomato & Vegetable Food
An organic base plant food for tomatoes, leafy vegetables or root crops. Use as a pre-plant or side dressing. Contains calcium, sulfur, iron, manganese and zinc.

We also carry five different lines of organic fertilizers for your garden
feedings. - Mulch your garden beds!
Most vegetables thrive best on a deep watering once a week 1 •••” per week.
By top dressing the soil stays moist longer and plants grow more consistently and fruit and vegetables have fewer problems in developing ( Less blossom end rot on tomatoes ), better, flavor, and texture.
Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers, and Strawberries
All of our plants are grown in local climates for local climate conditions.
They are also raised without hormones to force blooms or top growth before roots develop (have you ever removed a plant from the pot only to have the root ball fall apart in your hand?
Come in and pick up a copy of companion plantings. You may be un-doing your efforts if you are planting come combinations of vegetables, herbs, and flowers together!
